What are the best sports games on the PS4? Whether you’re a die-hard footie aficionado or a casual basketball watcher, there’s no question that sports games are among the most popular on consoles these days. Whether it’s hardcore simulations or more arcade-like adaptations, we’ve compiled the very best sports games on the PlayStation 4 – and you can enjoy pretty much all of them without having to break a sweat.
20. Mutant Football League (PS4)
Inspired by EA’s old SEGA Genesis game, Mutant Football League adopts an apocalyptic look at gridiron, where quaterbacks can quite literally be slaughtered when sacked. It’s buggy and imbalanced, but American football fans will appreciate the use of puns, while the fast-paced arcade action harks back to the halcyon days of NFL Blitz.

19. NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 (PS4)
With a cute and colourful aesthetic and card collecting aspect, NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 blends the physics defying dunks of NBA Jam with the team building systems that have infiltrated all contemporary sports games. There’s a sense that, with the NBA 2K branding now attached, this arcade alternative is going to improve drastically with future instalments; for now it competes with 3on3 Freestyle for the crown of the PS4’s best casual b-ball title.
18. The Golf Club 2019 Featuring PGA Tour (PS4)
Much like NBA 2K Playgrounds 2, publisher 2K Sports joined the project towards the end of The Golf Club 2019’s development cycle. In this instance, HB Studios also had to shoehorn in the PGA Tour license, which it acquired midway through production as well. It’s a testament to the overall quality of The Golf Club’s gameplay that this instalment is still so entertaining, then – but future iterations should really drive this franchise up this list like a particularly sweet tee off shot.
17. Racket Fury (PS4)
Sports Champions on the PlayStation 3 proved that Sony’s PS Move motion controllers were made for table tennis, and Racket Fury really realises the potential by adding the depth of PlayStation VR to the mix. While its cosmic backdrops and bland robotic opponents lack personality, the gameplay here is absolutely top-notch, as it simulates real-world table tennis almost exactly.
16. Steep (PS4)
Ubisoft’s done right by open world extreme sports title Steep, expanding upon it with regular updates, including a licensed Winter Olympics mode. While competition is at the core of most sports games, this outdoorsy experience is much more chill – and not just because it takes place in arctic conditions. With a variety of different disciplines to master, spanning skiing through to wingsuits, its fun simply exploring this title’s mountain ranges and finding new ways to navigate them.

NHL 19 is easily better than a third of the games listed... 😳
@KALofKRYPTON I had it in the list but then we decided to add the racing games. That said, we didn't love NHL 19: http://www.pushsquare.com/reviews/ps4/nhl_19
@get2sammyb I read the review before I bought it.
Whether through updates since launch or just personal taste, I can't really tally the review to the game I've been playing other than bits of the presentation getting repetitive.
It's as deep as you want it to be, or not. Looks and sounds good, control is incredible too. And there's an astonishing amount of content there.
As you already have a separate racing games list, it probably would have been best not to include them here.
What a difficult list to compile. I disagree with the majority of it, obviously, but it's an interesting feature nonetheless.
The only sports games that have really appealed to me this gen are the MLB The Show entries. I used to love NBA 2K as well but haven't been that enamored with it since the tail end of last gen. I miss getting good tennis games and more arcadey licensed games. NBA 2K Playgrounds is pretty cool for that stuff, but doesn't do for this gen what NBA Jam did way back in the day.
Real player motion is a buzzword. Maybe on PC. But on the Ps4, after the first few updates the new range of motion was patched out. Not including all the glitches still in the game.
FIFA at no 2?! When are people going to stop sucking up to that game and accept it's dreadful?!
As for skateboarding games, don't get me started. I can't believe we've not had a decent one this whole generation seeing as how popular THPS was on PS2 and Skate was on PS3.
Rocket League is acceptably high on this list.
Happy EG is a #5 very easy to play a round when you feel like it. PES should be higher than FIFA IMO. The gameplay is much better ON THE PITCH, where it counts.
MLB the show! No brainer
Still no sign of a tennis game. Did the Top Spin games not sell well? It seems if you can make a half decent sports game you can patch every year and sell it as a new product.
Doesn’t criticise pes when it is at 14th, Fifa is 2nd and you say the gameplay lags behind it. IMO, gameplay is more important than a nice champions league presentation so a very interesting decision.
haha i love NBA 2k19 : great gameplay and best franchise mode. that's it.. i don't bother playing Fifa games because i am not into Fifa games.. Madden 20 is worst football game ever i played
